New Books and Blogs
I have picked up The Fix: Soccer and Organized Crime by Declan Hill in preparation for business travel to Europe this coming week. I figured two 10-hour plane rides in six days will afford a lot of time to read about a topic I've recently been diving in to. The books been on my length Amazon wish list for some time, and I figured now was as good as any time to take the plunge. It's 408 pages long, so I suspect I won't complete it on the trip with the other responsibilities I will have. It's highly regarded in the soccer community, so I am curious as to what thoughts you readers may have. Just don't spoil any surprises for me.
Links of the Week
- Given the relative violence of last weekend's MLS action it's only natural that Soccer By the Numbers investigates what's happened to all of the cards.
- OnFooty examines when cards get dealt in matches.
- FootieBusiness argues that MLS's labor peace is a good thing compared to what the NFL is experiencing and what the NBA may experience, while a fomer player and current journalist argues that such labor peace shortchanges domestic players at to the benefit of returning US internationals (HT: The Overlapping Run).
- Sticking with the business of a single entity league, Goal.com examines how much MLS is giving up by having a league-wide kit contract with Adidas rather than allowing individual teams to negotiate kit deals (HT again to The Overlapping Run)
- A few free posts from Paul Tomkins. First, here are his and Paul Grech's thoughts on Liverpool doing so well against the rest of the Big Six. Second, Paul makes the argument for King Kenny being the permanent manager for Liverpool.
- MLS Talk proposes not having MLS go the way of the No Fun League and allow post-goal celebrations to take place without the threat of yellow cards.
- Finally, Jamie Jackson details a UEFA commentary that the English football system needs to be more like the Dutch system if it ever wants to produce the quality of team the small Dutch nation achieves on a regular basis.

Hamas will soon relocate its political headquarters to Qatar from Damascus, Palestinian sources
Hamas will soon relocate its political headquarters to Qatar from Damascus, Palestinian sources told the Arabic-language newspaper Dar Al-Hayat in a report published Saturday.
The report, which could not be immediately confirmed, came days after the Palestinian faction and its rival Fatah agreed to sign a reconciliation deal that would reunite the occupied territories.
Palestinian sources told the newspaper that the planned move to Doha came after Egypt and Jordan denied a similar request. Nevertheless, Egypt has agreed to host a Hamas "interest bureau," which Deputy Politburo Chief Mousa Abu Marzouk is likely to head.
Hamas' military leaders who are currently based in Damascus are slated to move to Gaza Strip, the paper said.
The information could not be independently corroborate. Al-Hayat did not list the reasons for Hamas' relocation, but hedged that it was linked with the popular uprising sweeping through Syria, which is threatening the stability of President Bashar Assad's regime; as well as the Fatah-Hamas reconciliation.
Hamas chief Khaled Masha'al will meet President and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo on Thursday to sign the deal, said representative of independent politicians Yaser Wadeiyah.
Wadeiyah said Palestinian factions would hold meetings in Cairo on Tuesday and Wednesday. Abbas and Masha'al would arrive in the Egyptian capital on Wednesday evening ahead of an official signing ceremony on Thursday.
It will be the first time the two men have met since the Islamist movement Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007, ousting Fatah from the coastal territory after a week of bloody street battles.
Abbas last meet with the exiled Hamas chief, based in Damascus, at the end of April 2007, just six weeks before the battles which dramatically worsened the bitter split between their two factions.
Fatah official Azzam Al-Ahmad said the reconciliation agreement would be signed at the Arab League headquarters, and that Palestinian factions would also be present.
Al-Ahmad headed a Fatah delegation in talks with Hamas, which on Wednesday resulted in a surprise unity deal.
The secular Fatah party which dominates the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority and Gaza's Islamist rulers agreed to form a transitional government ahead of elections to take place within the next year.
The announcement sparked a firestorm of criticism from Israel, which said it would damage chances for peace, but Abbas said the interim government would not dictate policy when it came to negotiations with Israel, which would remain the mandate of the Palestine Liberation Organization that he heads.
Tensions between Fatah and Hamas date back to the start of limited Palestinian self-rule in the early 1990s. They worsened dramatically in 2007 when Hamas forces ousted Fatah from the Gaza Strip after a week of deadly clashes, cleaving the Palestinian territories into hostile rival camps.
Revolutions overthrowing unrepresentative regimes across the Middle East took root for Palestinians in a call end the rivalry, and since March 15, protesters demanding Palestinian unity came onto the streets, camped out in public squares, and held hunger strikes.
Breaking News.Hamas official told AlaqsaTV that the Hamas leadership did not intend to leave the Syrian capital, and denied reports that Egypt had agreed to open an official Hamas office in Cairo,But the spokesman said Hamas suffer from problems in Damascus.
‘Corruption is worse than prostitution.
The latter might endanger the morals of an individual, the former invariably endangers the morals of the entire country.’
-Karl Kraus
(Austrian Journalist, Critic, Playwright and Poet, 1874-1936)
There couldn’t be a better or more apt definition of India’s corruption story than the one by Karl Kraus. Today, corruption has a vice-like grip on the Indian workplace-whether it is the sarkari office or corporate corridors.True, corruption does not recognize geographical boundaries, but when geography becomes synonymous with sleaze the problem accentuates.
Unethical behavior or corruption is a ‘universal phenomenon’ as Indira Gandhi once said. Then, corruption in India has moved beyond quantification ever since she justified dishonesty in governance. With hideous money involved in almost all government activity and scams occurring day in day out, there is little hope in India’s corruption indicator ever turning green.
Nevertheless, recent scandals in India involving unintelligible sums of money should cause some soul-searching. What has gained currency in a global setting is that corruption emanates from ‘crooked’ countries and it destroys the integrity of ‘honest’ nations. Whether or not ‘crookedness’ is India’s new gift to an ethically correct world is open to inquiry, but there is no denying the fact that India’s corruption narrative has assumed legendary proportions. Undeniably, India’s tryst with corruption continues to make headlines ever since the first financial scandal rocked the country -the Mundhra scandal. And, there seems no stopping the corruption rath treading along with thunderous clatter. Who knows who will be the next Kalmadi? Or which Raja is waiting to be handcuffed??
Questions like what makes one corrupt is just like asking what makes one hungry. Corruption in India has different dimensions and the cause-effect relationship is too well-known to warrant an illustration. Arguments like life-style changes impel people to run after iniquitous money might appear silly. But there is no invalidating the point that liberalization and globalization have unleashed tectonic shifts in the Indian way of life.Consequently, there is continuous craving for wealth. Where wealth can’t be gotten in a fair way, the best option is to do it through questionable means.
This is not to suggest that the clock should move back. What’s important is that corruption and its ill effects on the economy, governance and society should be widely debated. There is rarely much discussion about ethics/morals in college and university debates as it happened once. Even among the citizenry the topic is passé. It is nigh on taken for granted that corruption is here to stay and no body can do a thing about it, least of all, the Prime Minister whose honesty and non-corruptibility is a point of much discussion than corruption itself.
If corruption has become a fact of life and the general perception that things in India don’t move without greasing the appropriate palms getting stronger, what has added to the slur is that even the probe and prosecution lack in ethics.
Every job has honesty entwined into it.If the ethical argument has lost its shine, blame it on the attitudinal indifference when it comes to corruption. Even though we have built up an elaborative system of checks and balances, the corrupt get away with the proverbial long rope of law. Corrupt practices invariably have a quid pro quo and there always exists a kind of tacit understanding between the bribe-giver and the bribe-taker.
Exposé requires conviction and boldness. The ultimate test is one of catching the thief or letting him go.RTI has some answers to India’s owes of corruption. But it, too, has its limits.Post-2005, RTI has witnessed a very limited applicability and unless it becomes a wider tool in the hands of common people, corrupt practices in government will continue to make good news copy.
