The short diminutive 72-year old bachelor Anna Hazare is being likened to Mahatma Gandhi who believed in a philosophy of non violence to achieve his goals. While the Mahatma fought to gain independence from British rule, Anna Hazare is fighting to remove corruption from India’s life. His fast unto death is into its 4th day and he has created an uncomfortable situation in New Delhi. His crusade against corruption is gaining momentum every minute with people from all walks of life joining in his support.
In the recent past, a number of major scams have been reported connected to the Commonwealth Games, allotment of flats to officers of armed forces in Housing Complex meant for war widows, the 2-G Spectrum allotment etcetera. Those responsible for these scams have siphoned off millions and are going around secure in the knowledge that given the existing laws of the land, they can never be convicted. They will always manage to wriggle out of tough situations by virtue of money power or muscle power or by intimidation of witnesses. Hence, the smile never leaves their faces.
That is what Anna Hazare is fighting for – he wants strict legislation to bring these criminals to book. But – the government does not appear to be serious about the whole affair.
