A 24-year-old Indian student has been found raped and murdered after her body was located stuffed inside a suitcase near a canal in Sydney last week.
"On 11 March morning, construction workers found the suitcase containing the woman's body in a water canal near Meadowbank Park and alerted police," said a statement issued by the local police.
The victim was identified as Indian student Tosha Thakkar and police were now waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination to determine exactly how she died.
Thakkar was studying accounting at the Sydney College of Business and IT, which collaborates with Southern Cross University, and was a permanent resident of Australia.
Friends and family of Thakkar told media that they had no idea why she was killed.
The body of Thakkar was stuffed into a suitcase which construction workers spotted in a canal near Meadowbank Park as they were doing maintenance on an oil pipeline.
The accused lived close to the deceased's residence at Croydon. He was taken under arrest at a motel in Ashfield during the weekend. He appeared in the Parramatta Local Court on Sunday via video link as per media reports.
His bail application has been rejected formally by the court even though he had not applied for one. The matter has been deferred to the Burwood Local Court and a hearing is expected today. The students, during the hearing, have demonstrated posters where they have sought justice for Tosha Thakkar. A relative of the deceased, Anish Popli said that there was no reason why anyone should have attacked her. He revealed further that she was a harmless girl and was residing in the country for the past three to four years. Popli further stated that she was aware of the whole area. A spokeswoman from the Southern Cross University stated that the institution had conveyed their condolences to the family members, colleagues and friends of the deceased. It is presently making available counseling and support services to staff and students.
