Real Madrid's Marcelo reacts during their second leg round of 16 Champions League soccer match against Olympique Lyon at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid
The 4-1 aggregate victory helps banish memories of previous failures at the first knockout stage but it took a piece of Brazilian brilliance from Marcelo to ease their nerves.
The full-back exchanged passes with the fit-again Cristiano Ronaldo and surged into the area before cutting inside to beat Hugo Lloris.
Lyon had put Real out at the same stage last year and were finding their stride before Marcelo stuck on 37 minutes.
Real's French striker Karim Benzema proved a constant threat and he effectively sealed victory in the tie with the second just after the hour mark, taking advantage of defensive sloppiness to net his sixth goal in the competition this term.
