It was a sad day for cricket when Rocky Ponting, the Australian captain lost his cool and damaged the property of his host country. He had been run out in his innings against Zimbabwe in the encounter of the 2011 cricket world cup in Motera, Ahmadabad – he was obviously furious and vented his anger on the TV set in the dressing room.
The Australian team had probably underestimated the Zimbabwean team and, when they kept a tight leash on the runs by disciplined bowling, the Australians had to literally grovel for runs. The run out of Ponting was most unexpected. It was but natural that he gets annoyed at himself. But – taking it out on the TV set was most unlike any captain – no matter what the provocation.
He later apologized for his behavior but the unpleasant incident has left a black mark on his reputation.
