Canadian goalkeeper Quillan Roberts scores a goal with 3 minutes left to play to give their team a 2-2 tie against England in the FIFA U17 World Cup in Mexico.
It's very rare that a goalkeeper scores a goal in any soccer match. However, it is even more rare for a goalkeeper to score a goal in a FIFA U17 World Cup Qualifying Match. At the Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca, Mexico, Canada and England U17 teams played to a 2-2 tie yesterday evening.
However, the score was 2-1 in favor of England in the 87th minute when Canadian goalie Quillan Roberts scored the tying goal from beyond the halfway line on the pitch. The entire English team moved back in a defensive posture to prevent a quick score. However, they did not keep one person forward to pressure the keeper. Roberts was able to take the ball out of the penalty box to the midfield in order to kick the ball to the opponent's penalty box in a last-ditch effort to score a goal.
As players from both teams went to head the ball, they all missed and the ball bounced right inside of England's penalty area. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was caught out of position as the bouncing ball went over his head into the net for the tying goal.
This ending sort of explains why English international teams on all age levels fail to live up to the hype. They play too passive and they make critical mental errors at the wrong time. That allows for opposing teams to capitalize in a miraculous fashion just like this goal by Roberts.
By far, this tie is one of the biggest moments in Canadian soccer history. Canada coach Scott Fleming stated, "This is a great day for Canada's football. We're really happy with the result. We knew England was a good side. We bent, but we didn't break in this game."
