Radical Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir arrives for his trial at the South Jakarta court
An Indonesian court has declared Indonesian militant Abu Bakar Bashir guilty.
The judge sentenced him to 15 years in jail on charges that he had provided funds to a group which aimed to kill the president.
Bashir’s lawyer rejected the sentence despite the fact it fell short of the life term the prosecutors had been pushing for.
The lawyer said that they had respect for the sentence of this court but disagree with it; therefore, they would file an appeal.
Security was high around the court where over 500 Bashir supporters had gathered to watch the verdict.
Analysts say jailing Bashir is an important step for the Indonesian government in its efforts to weaken militant groups
