Officials of the international football association, FIFA, have dismissed the Iranian women’s soccer team because the tight headscarves the players were wearing to cover their hair broke the association’s dress code, Washington Post said.
The women players were set to play a qualifying match with Jordan in Ammam on Friday before they were stopped, leaving some of them crying in total despair, when notified about the unusual ruling.
Shahrzad Mozafar, the team’s former head coach, said “this ruling means that women soccer in Iran is over,” the Iranian government would no longer send them abroad for competitions.
Women in Iran were obliged to cover their hair, neck, arms and legs in accordance to Shiite Islamic doctrine.
They have excelled in international competitions but the ruling against head scarves had killed whatever professional ambitions they have in 2012 Olympics.
