EC President Rompuy announces confirms Draghi to be ECB chief

European government leaders gave their final approval on Friday for Bank of Italy Governor Mario Draghi to become the next chief of the European Central Bank (ECB).

The appointment was widely expected after Draghi won the support of the European Parliament and key leaders such as French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

It was announced by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy via Twitter.

Draghi will replace current ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet, whose term ends later this year.
