Ramdev landed at the Jolly Grant Airport near this Uttarakhand capital around 10.45 am to a warm welcome from his supporters who showered rose petals on him.

Clad in white robes, Ramdev was received at the airport by officials of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Uttarakhand government.

Ramdev refused to speak to reporters, saying he would hold a formal press conference to explain the details of the midnight action.

Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said the guru's hunger strike should have been allowed to continue.

"What was wrong with Baba's peaceful agitation? Why did the government get scared?" Pokhriyal said.

He said Ramdev had his "full freedom".

"If (Ramdev) wants to continue his agitation in Uttarakhand, he has full freedom to do it," Pokhriyal told reporters.

Police cracked down on Ramdev and his supporters in New Delhi's Ramlila ground after midnight Saturday and forcibly removed the yoga guru from the site. He was then externed from the capital.
